Statement from the Chamber

ARTESIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
STATEMENT REGARDING CLOSURE OF BUSINESSES IN GOVERNOR’S PUBLIC HEALTH ORDER
APRIL 28, 2020
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in New Mexico and the resulting Executive and Public Health Orders by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, businesses in the City of Artesia and Eddy County have largely complied with restrictions in an effort to reduce or prevent the spread of the virus.
While many businesses in Artesia are considered essential according to the Governor’s list, many of our smallest businesses and sole proprietors are not listed as essential, and in their compliance, have suffered the greatest blows to their livelihood.
The communities of Southeast New Mexico have worked hard to contain the spread of the virus while maintaining all the essential work that must be done for the benefit of the state. Southeast New Mexico has not developed into a “hotspot” and, in fact, has suffered a very limited number of cases of the virus.
The expected extension of the state’s Public Health Orders to May 15, the anticipated phased and limited reopening of business, and potential continued restrictions on community activity for the foreseeable future will have a detrimental impact on Southeast New Mexico. While our neighboring state, Texas, begins to reopen, we would rather encourage our residents to conduct business in our own community rather than become tempted to expand our exposure by traveling to Texas to conduct business that could otherwise be conducted here.
We stand with Eddy County Commission and its passage of Resolution R-20-36 acknowledging that a safe and cautious reopening of ALL businesses and activities in Eddy County can continue to minimize the spread of COVID-19 while also allowing our economy to begin recovery.
All New Mexicans have learned a great deal about social distancing protocols, including CDC guidelines and the governor’s Public Health Orders. The livelihood of our communities is at stake. Our businesses would willingly implement the proper protocols and adhere to social distancing guidelines if allowed to open.
