Eddy County COVID-19 Update: April 21, 2020
Eddy County, NM- Lately, there has been a significant amount of information in the press and media about the desire and need to reduce some of the restrictions on businesses allowing them to re-open and begin the journey of recovery. However, this is clearly a balance between the need to address public health issues and finding a path to address the economic impact that has resulted from the steps taken to protect public health.
Last week the White House unrolled Guidelines for Opening Up America Again, which is a three-phased approach based on expert advice of public health experts. According to the White House website, “These steps will help state and local officials when reopening their economies, getting people back to work, and continuing to protect American lives.” See the Guidelines for Opening Up America Again here.
Governor Lujan Grisham responded to the White House announcement saying, “We appreciate their suggestions, and we will evaluate them thoroughly, but the plain overriding fact is we cannot put the cart before the horse. As CDC, FEMA, and public health experts across the country have made clear, we are not at a point currently where it would be safe to reopen, and doing so prematurely would undo the heroic work of our health workers and first responders, endanger many more people and essentially guarantee enhanced transmission of the virus, leading to more illness and death.” See the Governor’s full press release here.
As a result of both the Federal and State announcements, Eddy County, along with other counties in the State are considering resolutions of support, requesting the Governor to initiate a program to address these questions.
Therefore, The Eddy County Commission Chairman has called a special Commission Meeting on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at 4:30 PM to consider approval of a Resolution requesting the Governor to re-open businesses closed by Executive and Public Health Orders. In order to comply with State and Federal orders, the Commission Chambers WILL NOT BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC during this meeting. However, the meeting will be audio live-streamed and on the Eddy County Facebook page and Eddy County Website. Due to the above requirement, any public comments or announcements must be emailed to gay@co.eddy.nm.us , postal mailed to the Eddy County Manager’s Office,101 W. Greene Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220, or submitted online on the Eddy County website Public Comment page. The deadline for comments/announcements is 12:00 PM on April 22, 2020.

This is the resolution that will be considered at the emergency meeting tomorrow at 4:30. https://www.co.eddy.nm.us/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_04222020-278
